Giving Is…

An act of obedience to God
A means of spiritual growth
A way to brings others to God
A means for God to bless you

God is good and gracious. He has given us all that we have. Yet God expects us to use our wealth and possessions wisely. He expects us to freely and cheerfully give of what we have (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Part of our giving is to go to those in need (Matthew 6:1-4). Part of our giving is to go towards sharing the gospel with the lost (Luke 16:9). Other portions of our giving are to go to support those who have dedicated their lives to preaching the gospel, and equipping the people of God (1 Corinthians 9:14).

Through our giving, we not only bless others, but God says it is actually a way that he will bless us (Matthew 6:4). By giving we grow in spiritual maturity, and lay up treasure for ourselves in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21).

In the Old Testament, the people of God were told to give a “tithe” or 10% of their income to God. While there is no command for Christians in the New Testament to give exactly 10%, all Christians are expected to give, and this percentage remains a good rule of thumb. Christians who have greater means should plan to give more, while those who have less means may need to give less.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-21  ESV
